Day 13 The Castle

This was to be "The Castle" day. Before breakfast I walked up to Greyfriars to get a photo of Greyfriars Bobby's Statue.
The seedy side of Edinburgh welcomed me.
Edinburgh's homeless must camp out at these places - but they're quite well heeled. Waterproof doonas and pillows abound - I must have been too early before they were organised for the day.
I was stooged. I saw my Scottish 5 pound note going into an early opener on my way back to the B&B.

My bus ticket was still good so I did another lap on the way to the Castle.

Edinburgh Castle is awesome on four levels:
Firstly how it, or rather the Rock it is perched on, absolutely dominates the city.
Secondly, the Castle exterior itself with it's familiar views from watching decades of Tattoo telecasts.
Thirdly, the magnificent views of Edinburgh and the greater area that are to be had in every direction.
And fourthly, the myriad of absorbing things to be found around every corner inside - each with centuries of history behind it - including the Crown Jewels etc.

It is truly amazing.

What's left of the afternoon after leaving the Castle is spent strolling down the Royal Mile, pausing long enough at St. Giles Cathedral to be surprised by its' majesty, history, and the rich Thistle Chapel with an Angel playing bagpipes high up in the gilt-encrusted ceiling.

Even though my 24 hour ticket had expired I managed yet another lap of this magnificent city
("Ye'll get naw frrrrrrequent flyerrrr points wi' us lad!")
