Day 15 Hadrian did the Celts a favour!

Dragged myself away from Edinburgh early and headed for England.
Drove to Carlisle and took a detour to the quaintly named Haltwhistle in search of Hadrian's Wall. The Roman's thought they were keeping the Celts out of England but I bet the Jocks were laughing. Such a wall works both ways - fancy getting someone else to build a wall for you to keep the english out of Scotland!
Hadrian's Wall now qualifies as the oldest man-made "anything" I've actually, knowingly seen.
It really is an engineering feat that would challenge many of today's "men-of-vision", and I doubt that any of today's stuctures will still be around in 1700 years time.

Suitably impressed, I head back through Carlisle and through the top of the Lakes District to the coast at Whitehaven. The scenery is definitely English and I couldn't get "I wandered lonely as a cloud... " out of my head.

I know I shouldn't be too judgemental, but ... .
Whitehaven is crowded.
I find a parking spot that says "2 Hour Parking"and head for the TIC.
When I return I have a parking fine plastered onto the window. Back to the TIC.
Apparently I need a disc to display on the dashboard which they give me.
I cannot get over the impression of being so crowded after the drive from Edinburgh. The buildings are multistory and narrow, the streets are narrow, people are rushing everywhere and the "Laundrette" doesn't allow me to do my washing!
I get some Fish and Chips and head to the docks for tea. There's this really wierd lightshow and I can't understand it. (I hadn't seen the area in daylight.)
Being confused and frustrated I have an early night.
